Summary : Elegant, passionate, and filled with the love of God's creation, Abraham Joshua Heschel's The Sabbath has been hailed as a classic of Jewish spirituality ever since its original publication--and has been read by thousands of people seeking meaning in modern life. In this brief yet profound meditation on the meaning of the Seventh Day, Heschel, one of the most widely respected religious leaders of the twentieth century, introduced the influential idea of an 'architecture of holiness" that appears not in space but in time. Judaism, he argues, is a religion of time: it finds meaning not in space and the materials things that fill it but in time and the eternity that imbues it, so that 'the Sabbaths are our greatcatherdrals.'

Summary : When it comes to the doctrine of the Sabbath, many are confused. Some are so confused that they are asking how many commandments are there, nine or ten? Has the fourth commandment been abrogated or is it still binding? If the fourth commandment stands, then on what day are we to observe the Sabbath, on Saturday or Sunday? Or does it really matter just as long as we take off one day in the week? Others have come to think that all the commandments have been abrogated. Is this true? A more searching question is asked, Is the typical Christian community correct in observing the Sabbath on the first day of the week? Or does the fourth commandment mandate the Sabbath to be observed on seventh day? Still others are asking, is the Sabbath Day and the Lords Day same or are they different? As one can readily see, these questions are troubling to many professing Christians. They are confused as the doctrine of the Sabbath is no longer addressed. However, the more searching question is, if the fourth commandment stands, have we provoked our Lord to anger in failing to observer the Sabbath as we ought? If we are to observe it, then how is the Sabbath to be observed? It is the writers conviction that we are not only to observe the Sabbath, but also until we do, there will be no revival in this country no matter how fervently we may fast and pray. The doctrine of the Sabbath is essential to the life of the church and the liberties we once enjoy as a nation before it was infected with this liberation theology. We must heed the divine mandate coming down from God to Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it Holy (Exodus 20:8).

Summary : Discussions about the Sabbath often center around moralistic laws and arguments over whether a person should be able to play cards or purchase liquor on Sundays. In this volume, popular author Walter Brueggemann writes that the Sabbath is not simply about keeping rules but rather about becoming a whole person and restoring a whole society. Importantly, Brueggemann speaks to a 24/7 society of consumption, a society in which we live to achieve, accomplish, perform, and possess. We want more, own more, use more, eat more, and drink more. Keeping the Sabbath allows us to break this restless cycle and focus on what is truly important: God, other people, all life. Brueggemann offers a transformative vision of the wholeness God intends, giving world-weary Christians a glimpse of a more fulfilling and simpler life through Sabbath observance.

Summary : The Sabbath has always been a sacred day in Jewish culture, but with the pressures and demands of modern life, it can become harder and harder to honor the time of quiet and respect that comprises the Sabbath. Bonnie Saul Wilks encourages believers not to succumb to this apathy. After spending years studying Jewish culture and practice, Bonnie committed to keeping the Sabbath holy and observing the rites that had become almost obscure in the world today. In her book, Sabbath, Bonnie discusses what makes the seventh day special; and through current traditions, songs, and Sabbath recipes, demonstrates how it can truly be a time of rest and communion with family and God. Join Bonnie in her rediscovery of an ancient ritual and see just how the Sabbath can be A Gift of Time. After graduating from Bible school, Bonnie moved to Israel where she lived on a kibbutz for over two years. She learned Hebrew and grew to love the Jewish culture by interfacing with Israelis on a daily basis. Wayne and Bonnie have one twenty-one-year-old daughter.

Summary : In today's world, with its relentless emphasis on success and productivity, we have lost the necessary rhythm of life, the balance between work and rest. Constantly striving, we feel exhausted and deprived in the midst of great abundance. We long for time with friends and family, we long for a moment to ourselves. Millennia ago, the tradition of Sabbath created an oasis of sacred time within a life of unceasing labor. Now, in a book that can heal our harried lives, Wayne Muller, author of the spiritual classic How, Then, Shall We Live?, shows us how to create a special time of rest, delight, and renewal--a refuge for our souls. We need not even schedule an entire day each week. Sabbath time can be a Sabbath afternoon, a Sabbath hour, a Sabbath walk. With wonderful stories, poems, and suggestions for practice, Muller teaches us how we can use this time of sacred rest to refresh our bodies and minds, restore our creativity, and regain our birthright of inner happiness.

Summary : In James K. Humphrey and the Sabbath-Day Adventists, R. Clifford Jones tells the story of this important black religious figure and his attempt to bring about self-determination for twentieth-century blacks in New York City. Humphrey was a Baptist minister who joined the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church shortly after arriving in New York City from Jamaica at the turn of the twentieth century. A leader of uncommon competency and charisma, Humphrey functioned as an SDA minister in Harlem during the time the community became the black capital of the United States. Though he led his congregation to a position of prominence within the SDA denomination, Humphrey came to believe the black experience in Adventism was one of disenfranchisement. When he refused to alter his plans for a utopian community for blacks in the face of dissent from SDA church leaders, Humphrey's ministerial credentials were revoked and his congregation dissolved. Subsequently, Humphrey established an independent black religious organization, the United Sabbath-Day Adventists. This book rescues the Sabbath-Day Adventists from obscurity. Humphrey's break with the Seventh-day Adventists provides clues to the state of black-white relationships in the denomination at the time. It set the stage for the creation of the separate administrative structure for blacks established by the SDA church in 1945. This history of a minister and his church demonstrates the struggles of small, independent, black congregations in the urban community during the twentieth century. R. Clifford Jones is an associate professor at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan. He is the editor of Preaching with Power and has authored scholarly articles on the emergence of the Sabbath-Day Adventists.
