Summary : To the Letter tells the story of our remarkable journey through the mail. From Roman wood chips discovered near Hadrian's Wall to the wonders and terrors of email, Simon Garfield explores how we have written to each other over the centuries and what our letters reveal about our lives. Along the way he delves into the great correspondences of our time, from Cicero and Petrarch to Jane Austen and Ted Hughes (and John Keats, Virginia Woolf, Jack Kerouac, Anaïs Nin and Charles Schulz), and traces the very particular advice offered by bestselling letter-writing manuals. He uncovers a host of engaging stories, including the tricky history of the opening greeting, the ideal ingredients for invisible ink, and the sad saga of the dead letter office. As the book unfolds, so does the story of a moving wartime correspondence that shows how letters can change the course of life. To the Letter is a wonderful celebration of letters in every form, and a passionate rallying cry to keep writing.

Summary : "This commentary by Markus Barth and Helmut Blanke is unique for its exhaustive study of the ancient world at the time Philemon was written. The volume examines the institution of slavery in Paul's day, drawing from secular Greco-Roman sources and from other Christian writers of the time. The references to slavery found in Ephesians, Colossians, and 1 Timothy are also compared and contrasted with Paul's statements in Philemon. In addition, the verse-by-verse commentary focuses on important themes in Pauline theology, including love, faith and faithfulness, church unity, providence, free will, and human responsibility. Finally, Barth makes his exposition even more useful by surveying the history of the interpretation of Philemon, from the patristic age to modern liberation theologians." "The product of Markus Barth's lifelong research and completed by Helmut Blanke, this new volume in the Eerdmans Critical Commentary series will become the standard work on Philemon."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Summary : Brunner sees St Paul's Epistle to the Romans as 'the chapter of destiny of the Christian Church'. Here, in Luther's words, is the 'purest gospel' upon which the very existence of the Christian faith depends and from which it draws its life. Concentrated, decisive and instructive, nothing within the New Testament is more closely argued both theological and personal. Out of his years of scholarly wisdom Brunner meditates on the great Epistle, and in his commentary elucidates the massive Pauline arguments which are the bed rock of Christian belief and Christian proclamation

Summary : In this commentary G. Walter Hansen offers rich exposition of the text of Philippians as well as wisdom and maturity in its application. In so doing he emphasizes partnership -- the social and corporate dimensions of community -- in the progress of the gospel. After a select bibliography, Hansen's introduction sets forth the historical setting of the church in Philippi, the nature and occasion of the letter, and a preview of two key themes -- the gospel of Christ and the community in Christ. The commentary itself discusses Philippians in light of these themes, considering Paul's greetings, reports of gospel ministry, imperatives for citizens worthy of the gospel, recommendations of two Christ-like servants, and disclosures of his personal experience. Hansen's treatment as a whole is distinctive for the way it draws out and highlights the themes of partnership, citizenship, and friendship in Paul's Philippian letter. - Publisher.

Summary : "The arguments for the authenticity of the Letter of Speusippus are re-evaluated. In what is a radical reassessment, it is argued that the letter is best interpreted in the context of events that took place during the reign of Perdiccas III. The 31st Socratic letter (likely to be a genuine work of Plato) provides evidence of Plato's involvement in Macedonian affairs in the late 360's, an involvement that resulted in the hostility exhibited by Philip towards Plato and his successors in the Academy. In contrast, Philip was on friendly terms with Isocrates and provided patronage to the leading intellectuals of the day, among whom were such men as Anaximenes, Theopompus and Callisthenes. The rhetorical structure of the letter is analysed in depth thereby elucidating Speusippus' aim in addressing Philip and at the same time holding up a mirror to Isocrates' Philip in which we see the latter work reflected in greater clarity. A text and translation together with a full commentary on the letter is provided, as is also an extended appendix on Plato's letter to Philip"--P. [4] of cover.

It is encouraging to read through The Letter and feel Tiena's Practical Paradigm. The Letter manifests itself as a 'love story' ending with the renewed pledge of, "We fall in love once again... For ever and ever you are mine." The novel is also imbued with 'moral adjuncts'
