Summary : This book explores James Tissot's multifaceted career and provides a fresh perspective on the 19th-century French painter. James Tissot is best known for his paintings of fashionable women and society life in the late 19th century. Born in Nantes, France, he trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris where he befriended James McNeill Whistler and Edgar Degas. Tissot's career defies categorization and he never formally belonged to the Impressionist circle despite an invitation from Degas. An astute businessman, Tissot garnered commercial and critical success on both sides of the English Channel while defying traditional conventions. He received recognition at the time from patrons and peers, and even his society portraits reveal a rich and complex commentary on Victorian and fin-de-siècle culture. This lavishly illustrated book, featuring paintings, enamels, and works on paper, explores Tissot's life and career from his early period in Nantes to his later years when he made hundreds of spiritual and religious works. The volume also includes essays that introduce new scholarship to redefine Tissot's placement within the narratives of the 19th-century canon. Published with Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco

Summary : Jacques Tissot was born to a middle class family. He initially studied art at Beaux-Arts in Paris. He decided to move to London in 1871. Here Tissot started to paint highly finished pictures of London society. The main criticisms were that the pictures were really only painted photographs, and they were vulgar. In 1876 he met a young and attractive Irish divorcee called Kathleen Newton. She became Tissot’s mistress, and moved into his London home, became Tissot’s muse, and appeared in many of his pictures. She was in every sense the love of his life. In 1882, Kathleen Newton died of consumption. Tissot never recovered from this tragedy, and moved back to Paris within a week of her death .He was never again romantically involved with woman. Initially he carried on painting society and genre pictures in Paris, but soon gave this up, devoting the rest of his life to painting religious scenes. In his late years Tissot became increasingly interested in Spiritualism.

Summary : Engaging, sophisticated, and witty, French-born artist James Joseph Tissot (1836-1902) painted for many years in London before returning to Paris in the 1880s. His works not only document contemporary fashion, manners, and mores, but also the paradoxes and anxieties of his age. In this book, ten contributors approach Tissot and his art from a variety of theoretical positions and disciplines to arrive at fresh and often startling insights. Looking both at and beneath Tissot’s seductive surfaces, the authors attempt to identify and decode the artist’s subtexts - issues of gender, class, and such ancillary topics as voyeurism, exhibitionism, fetishism, kitsch, and spiritualism.

Summary : James Tissot (French, 1836 ?1902) was one of the most intriguing artists of his era. Though invited by Edgar Degas to exhibit with the Impressionist circle, Tissot instead garnered exceptional critical and commercial success on his own in London and Paris, securing his international reputation. While he is best known for his keen observations of society life and fashion, Tissot also made hundreds of spiritual and religious works that have since provided visual motifs for artists and filmmakers working to this day. Rendered with incredible detail, his compositions offer layers of meaning to lend rich insights into the vibrant culture of fin-de-siècle Europe.00Exhibition: Legion of Honor Museum, San Francisco, USA (12.10.2019-09.02.2020) / Musée d'Orsay, Paris, France (24.03.-19.07.2020).
