Summary : “The greatest World War II story never told” (Esquire)—an enthralling account of the heroic mission to rescue the last survivors of the Bataan Death March. On January 28, 1945, 121 hand-selected U.S. troops slipped behind enemy lines in the Philippines. Their mission: March thirty rugged miles to rescue 513 POWs languishing in a hellish camp, among them the last survivors of the infamous Bataan Death March. A recent prison massacre by Japanese soldiers elsewhere in the Philippines made the stakes impossibly high and left little time to plan the complex operation. In Ghost Soldiers Hampton Sides vividly re-creates this daring raid, offering a minute-by-minute narration that unfolds alongside intimate portraits of the prisoners and their lives in the camp. Sides shows how the POWs banded together to survive, defying the Japanese authorities even as they endured starvation, tropical diseases, and torture. Harrowing, poignant, and inspiring, Ghost Soldiers is the mesmerizing story of a remarkable mission. It is also a testament to the human spirit, an account of enormous bravery and self-sacrifice amid the most trying conditions.

Summary : My father would always read to me or tell me stories from a picture book so one day when I was young I asked him to draw me a picture and tell me a war story. I enlisted in the military because these terrible men were trying to hurt my friends and family. They would make them walk on long marches then lock them up like caged animals. They would lock up everyone in their family even the little girls. Being one of the best hunters I was selected to serve on a team with men from other countries and travel all around the world helping free these people. One time we were dropped off in a little rubber boat to paddle our way to an island during the biggest storm ever. The wind and rain were blowing and the waves made it almost impossible to stay inside the boat. We went in to hunt down the bad guys like Daniel Boone or David Crocket. We were the unknown men with no faces or name tags that silently moved through the night being known for civil war tactics as the advance unit of Ghost Soldiers. We had to live off of the land eating whatever we could find like berries, fruit, or hunting the animals. We would throw hand grenades into the water that would bring up the snakes, alligators, fish or whatever was living in the water. The islands were the most beautiful places in the world with all the green plants and the most beautiful flowers and colored birds. We freed the people that were taken prisoner and one camp there was a beautiful young girl by the name of Virginia and she is the person I named you after. The dream of someday having a daughter of my own that I could love and protect gave me the willpower needed in combat.

Summary : Pulitzer Prize-winning poet James Tate returns with his fifteenth book of poetry, an exciting new collection that offers nearly one hundred fresh and thought-provoking pieces that embody Tate's trademark style and voice: his accessibility, his dark humor, and his exquisite sense of the absurd. Tate's work is stark—he writes in clear, everyday language—yet his seemingly simple and macabre stories are layered with broad and trenchant meaning. His characters are often lost or confused, his settings bizarre, his scenarios brilliantly surreal. Opaque, inscrutable people float through a dreamlike world where nothing is as it seems. The Ghost Soldiers offers resounding proof, once again, that Tate stands alone in American poetry.

When he reluctantly joins his father on a long trip away from home, a surprise awaits him. Summary : What set the successful armies of Sparta, Macedon, and Rome apart from those they defeated? In this major new history of battle from the age of Homer through the decline of the Roman empire, J. E. Lendon surveys a millennium of warfare to discover how militaries change--and don't change--and how an army's greatness depends on its use of the past. Noting this was an age that witnessed few technological advances, J. E. Lendon shows us that the most successful armies were those that made the most effective use of cultural tradition. Ancient combat moved forward by looking backward for inspiration--the Greeks, to Homer; the Romans, to the Greeks and to their own heroic past. The best ancient armies recruited soldiers from societies with strong competitive traditions; and the best ancient leaders, from Alexander to Julius Caesar, called upon those traditions to encourage ferocious competition at every rank. Ranging from the Battle of Champions between Sparta and Argos in 550 B.C. through Julian's invasion of Persia in A.D. 363, Soldiers and Ghosts brings to life the most decisive military contests of ancient Greece and Rome. Lendon places these battles, and the methods by which they were fought, in a sweeping narrative of ancient military history. On every battlefield, living soldiers fought alongside the ghosts of tradition--ghosts that would inspire greatness for almost a millennium before ultimately coming to stifle it.
