Summary : The edited volume, Contemporary Perspectives on Capital in Educational Contexts, is timely in its unique and appropriate analyses of the prevailing internal and external dynamics of capital as indicative of the type of currency within institutional structures or the currency among individual stakeholders of education. The intersection of capital and currency emerges similarly and differently within the American compulsorybased system of K12 and the choicebased system of higher education. More specifically, Contemporary Perspectives on Capital in Educational Contexts disentangles the broader challenges and opportunities of the institution of education and the individuals who comprise. Emerging insights from the analyses provide an informed basis for ascertaining the rules of engagement and means of negotiation for the respective constituencies. With that said, this volume essentially responds to three important questions: 1) What are the tenets of capital and currency in public schools and higher education?; 2 ) How do institutions and individuals navigate those tenets?; and 3) What general and specific implications do capital hold for the educational pipeline and beyond? These questions provide a useful framework for engaging critical conversations about the dynamics of capital while offering perspectives about how to improve the quality of currency in K12 or colleges and universities. These questions further serve as a basis for eliciting more questions toward the consideration capital as both a conceptual construct and applicable model. Contemporary Perspectives on Capital in Educational Contexts, too, is an expansion of the work of School matters: Why African American students need multiple forms of capital, where Bartee & Brown (2006) examines how the acquisition and possession of capital equips African American students in a highperforming, highachieving magnet school in Chicago for competitiveness in schoolgenerated and nonschool generated activities. Success experienced by the students and the school become associated with the academic rigor and reputation while any shortcomings reflect an inadequate capacity of the school or the student to appropriately engage the other. School matters: Why African American students need multiple forms of capital (2006) further introduces an initial exploration of different forms of capital as producer (improve the status quo through inputs), consumer (participant based upon outputs), and regulator (maintain the status quo through the process) within the educational system. The multifaceted role of capital demonstrates its span of influence for institutional and individual capacities.

Summary : In the aftermath of the financial crisis, capital management has become a critical factor in value creation for banks and other financial institutions. Although complex and subject to regulatory change, the strategic importance of capital management became apparent during the crisis and has moved the subject to the top of corporate agendas. Bank and Insurance Capital Management is an essential guide to help banks and insurance companies understand and manage their capital position. Bridging the gap between theory and practice, it provides proven techniques for managing bank capital, as well as explaining key capital management perspectives, including accounting, regulatory, risk and capital management and corporate finance. It also shows how to analyze a firm's stakeholders such as depositors, policy holders, debt holders and shareholders, and manage their expectations, and how to align risk and capital management so as to best optimize the return on capital and preserve capital in periods of stress. Economic capital is also discussed in depth, as are the practicalities of bank and insurance M&A, and the book also shows how financial innovations can be used to optimise the capital position and how diversification effects are reflected in the capital position. This book will arm readers with the knowledge and skills needed to understand how capital management can improve capital structure and performance, achieving an optimal cost of, and return on capital, creating value as a result.

Summary : Dealing with all aspects of risk management that have undergone significant innovation in recent years, this book aims at being a reference work in its field. Different to other books on the topic, it addresses the challenges and opportunities facing the different risk management types in banks, insurance companies, and the corporate sector. Due to the rising volatility in the financial markets as well as political and operational risks affecting the business sector in general, capital adequacy rules are equally important for non-financial companies. For the banking sector, the book emphasizes the modifications implied by the Basel II proposal. The volume has been written for academics as well as practitioners, in particular finance specialists. It is unique in bringing together such a wide array of experts and correspondingly offers a complete coverage of recent developments in risk management.

Summary : We undertake a mathematical clarification of the QIS5 proposal for the calculation of the Motor Third Party Liability (MTPL) man-made catastrophe risk capital in terms of two more general models. The QIS5 model assumption implies that the total loss consists of a single catastrophe claim in case it occurs during the next one-year insurance time period. However, the total loss should instead be dynamically modelled by a sequence of claims of varying size that follow a compound Poisson Pareto model, which is our first alternative model. A second possibility also takes into account the effect of investments, whose financial return process follows a Black-Scholes-Merton model. If one excludes limits of coverage, then asymptotically as the total loss increases without limits the first model is equivalent to the model assumption obtained from the QIS5 assumption by replacing a single catastrophe claim by the total loss. In other words, the QIS5 simple model is justified as limiting asymptotic approximation to the classical compound Poisson Pareto model. Conversely, an asymptotic approximation to the VaR economic capital from this model identifies with a modified QIS5 CAT formula. The inclusion of limits of coverage is also analyzed. In this situation we obtain new simple closed-form implementations of the economic capital formulas

Summary : This groundbreaking book presents a critical introduction to the cultural and political dimensions of contemporary Chinese cinema. Leading Western and Chinese scholars trace the changing dynamics of Chinese film culture since the early 1990s as it moves away from underground and toward independence in the new century. Yet as the rich case studies illustrate, the sheer variety of alternative film culture itself provides sufficient opportunities for different—at times contradictory—configurations of cinematic products. Drawing on vigorous interdisciplinary scholarship, the book investigates the objects of its study from various methodological perspectives, ranging from historical and literary to sociological and ethnographic. In addition to offering critical readings of specific texts, this book explores alternative film culture through personal interviews, on-site observations, and media interrogations, from traditional print media to the visual media of film, television, and video, including the new digital media of the Internet. The contributors also consider the flourishing independent documentary filmmaking scene, highlighting a crucial part of alternative film that has been previously obscured by an almost exclusive attention on the fifth- and sixth-generation directors of fictional movies. With its fresh and knowledgeable analysis of Chinese underground and independent filmmaking, this book will be essential reading for all those interested in a society caught between socialism and global currents. Contributions by: Chris Berry, Jim Cheng, Valerie Jaffee, Matthew David Johnson, Tonglin Lu, Chen Mo, Seio Nakajima, Paul G. Pickowicz, Zhiwei Xiao, and Yingjin Zhang.

Summary : Drawing on the work of Henri Lefebvre and Barbara Adam, Gender, Space, and Time is a brilliant study that offers a unique and original threefold conceptualization of how space and time is developed and applied in an empirical study of women's lives. Moss conceptualizes women as centers of action and demonstrates the ways in which they construct personal pathways, connect different spheres of experience, intergrate new time demands into the multiple rhythms of their everyday lives, and carve out personal space.

Summary : "Pangasius" is a genus of shark catfishes native to Asia. The term is often used to refer to the commercially important Pangasius bocourti, or basa fish. In Vietnam, water pollution in Pangasius aquaculture endangers its economic success and meaning for rural development in the Mekong Delta. With the help of Bourdieu´s theory of practice, this book considers the interplay of subjective and objective structures on the practices in Pangasius cultivation. It shows that economic dependencies in a global commodity production system have led to a transformation process that most aquaculturists cannot cope with. The discrepancy between the ideal and real situation can no longer be ignored otherwise the downward trend will continue. (Series: ZEF Development Studies - Vol. 26)
